In 1952 Sheaffer introduced the Snorkel pen line,
which is recognized today as one of the most complex filling
mechanisms ever made. The Snorkel is essentially a
redesigned and more advanced Touchdown system that uses a thin
filling tube that extends and retracts from underneath the nib
in the front of the feed, allowing the pen to be filled without
getting the nib wet, and therefore avoiding wiping and contact
with ink. The pens pictured below are very nice user grade examples of the Snorkel line of pens and guaranteed to fill and write as they should. |

Sheaffer introduced the Touchdown filling system
in 1949, effectively replacing the fifteen year old Vacuum-Fill
system with arguably a more effective, though much lower
capacity pneumatic plunger filling system. Touchdown pens are filled by unscrewing the cap at the end of the barrel and pulling out the plunger. In the Touchdown pen it is a hollow metal tube. The nib section is then put in the ink and the plunger is quickly pushed in, which creates pneumatic (air) pressure that compresses an ink sac inside a tube in the barrel. The user counts to ten, withdraws the nib, wipes, and is ready to write. |

In 1947, the Vacuum-Fil version of the Craftsman disappeared
from the catalog, leaving only the lever-filling version until
1950, when the Touchdown TM made its appearance. The new
Touchdown Craftsman retained the Nš 33 nib and the wire-band
styling (thicker and more cigar shaped than the new Touchdown TM
models), but it did use the same internal components as the
Touchdown TM. The pens pictured below are all good user grade examples of the Craftsman TD line. In some cased the nibs have been replaced with other gold Sheaffer nibs.... but all pens are guaranteed to write as they should |

| When Sheaffer introduced the Snorkel filling system in 1952, Sheaffer redesigned many of the existing Thin Model or TM Touchdown pens to the new Snorkel system. The reliable Touchdown system was not abandoned, but was relegated to a new entry level models the Cadet. It was advertised as the "Tip-Dip" pens, emphasizing that like the higher priced Snorkel models, these pens, too, were "clean filling." | |
